Make Breakfast Better With Whole Grains

My relationship with breakfast is not good since I had children. I must admit, I can only survive my morning with a cup of coffee and a slice of bread. After that, I am ready to start my day. I know for a fact that it is not recommended since it lacks some of the food groups that will help me jumpstart my day.

Now, I want to change that especially now that my kids will be starting school in few months time. I must admit, I had a hard time with my eldest last year when he went to school because I have seen the effects of it from his daily activities because I could hardly make him eat breakfast in the morning.

But what is good with my kids is that they never omit cereals from their everyday meal. They make sure that they could eat at least a bowl or more (LOL) everyday. Although, I have to make their eating habits right and at least incorporate in their meals all the food groups as much as possible.

Why is breakfast the most important meal of the day?

“We believe breakfast is more than a good start to your dayit’s the foundation for a better future. We want moms to feel empowered to make informed and healthy choices, so they can provide the best nutrition for their children. We have made this easier by making whole grain the number one ingredient in all Nestlé Breakfast Cereals that are popular with school children and teens,” said Ece Durukan, Nestlé Regional Nutrition and External Affairs Manager for Asia, Middle East, and Africa.

Why whole grains?

Whole grains are made up of three parts, together they deliver package of important nutrients. When grains are refined to make 'white' products, like white bread, white rice and pasta, the outer parts of the grain are thrown away and only the middle section is used.

A GRAIN is composed of three parts: BRAN, ENDOSPERM, and GERM. Each has its own important content. BRAN contains fiber, Anti-oxidants, B Vitamins and Minerals. ENDOSPERM has Carbohydrates, Proteins and B Vitamins. GERM has Proteins, Vitamins B & E, Magnesium and Essential Fats.

“The 8th National Nutrition Survey clearly demonstrates the need to increase awareness amongst Filipinos on the importance of eating whole grains. It is alarming that consumption levels in the Philippines are far below recommended levels and that the vast majority of Filipinos are missing out on the benefits associated with whole grains, which include lower body weight and cholesterol levels, as well as reduced risk of diabetes and other chronic diseases,” commented Ma. Adrienne Constantino, Former Supervising Science Research Specialist of Nutritional Assessment and Monitoring Division, FNRI.

Nestle Philippines hosted a 'master class' event wherein they discussed the importance of eating healthy breakfast and encourage families to add more whole grain to their daily nutrition for healthier future. Daughter and I had so much fun kneading the dough and creating our own Koko Krunch cereals.

It is much better if we start from ourselves so we could be good role models of our children who eats healthy. Let us not miss out eating whole grains and make breakfast better with Nestle.
