My Switch To Menstrual Cups

Some few years ago, three years to be exact, I have already made up my mind to try to make a switch from my regular menstrual pads to menstrual cups. I remembered having to ask my friend from Canada if she could bring home a Diva cup because it wasn’t widely available from stores yet. At least that was I knew back then.

Year after that, I got pregnant with my youngest and the switch has been put off until the fifth month after I gave birth to him. I had horrible nightmare using disposables which caused me sleepless nights. It was when I was forced to order online a brand which unfortunately wasn’t the correct size. I decided to get one instead at Mamaway store in EDSA Shangri-la in the hopes that the brand I was eyeing was available in store.

But instead, I got a different brand which is the Me Luna and I have never been so happy that I really made a switch. Honestly, I also had a lot of what ifs and buts about this whole change. But then again, I have decided already and here’s why;

  • No more stinky trash. Menstrual blood smells Marigold—stinky. If stored for the longest period of time, I cannot imagine what it will smell like and how our whole comfort room will be. At least, I am able to eliminate the bad odor causing element in our household.
  • No more rash and irritation. Honestly, I have never encountered any problems with cotton disposable napkins before even with my teenage years, it was only when during the two weeks in succession of using disposable pads that caused me severe itchiness and irritation with pads. Not going back to it anymore.
  • Big savings. Imagine how much disposables per month you are going to use compared to buying just one menstrual cup and good for maximum of ten years? Do the math.
  • Eco-friendly. This one too. No more wastes that aren’t recyclable.
  • Shortened menstrual flow. Before, I would put pads up to six days max. This time, I only put the cup for about four days maximum.
  • No more red days. When you have period, you instantly cancel all trips. But not this time because red days will be the least of your worries.

Any product has its cons and I will share it with you as well based from my experience.

  • While the product promises ease with the red-days, it is also quite cumbersome to drain the cup in public places. That is why it is also recommended that you have to be equipped with necessary essentials that comes with it.

  • There will be leaks most especially when it is your first time to use it and if the cup is already full. I would recommend using reusable cloth pads together with this.

  • The danger of bacterial contamination. Anything that we put inside our body should be clean. There is danger in contamination of bacteria once we do not clean it properly. I recommend to clean it depending on the instructions of the brand and store it in a clean place.
  • Allergy to rubber. You should have yourself checked whether or not you have such allergy.

That sums up my story for switching to menstrual cups and my continuous efforts of going green, a simple way of conserving the environment. If you have any questions about it, feel free to leave them on the comment section and if you have additional information as well.

Have you ever used one of these? Let me know.
