How To Train a Safe Jumper

Many horseback riders enjoy the thrill of jumping, but whether you’re into cross-country or show jumping, you need a safe mount to ensure you can navigate the course without an accident. Here are three tips for training a reliable jumper you can trust to keep you safe on the course.

Introduce Your Horse To Various Types of Jumps

Because horses often spook at unfamiliar objects, it is a good idea to introduce your mount to many of the obstacles he or she will encounter frequently. There are many types of jumps, so while your horse may be fine around standard obstacles, he or she may spook around horse jump roll tops. If you take the time to show your horse many different types of jumps before entering the arena, he or she is less likely to spook on the course.

Work on Controlling Speed

While most jumping events are timed, going through the course too quickly can be a disaster. Some horses tend to rush fences or move too quickly for a safe, controlled jump, so you need to make sure your mount responds to your commands when you signal for him or her to slow down. Work on speed in your home arena to make sure you are ready for events.

Build Trust

Jumping events require a partnership between horses and riders. You can’t expect to win at any event if you don’t have a strong bond so you need to focus on building trust outside of the arena. Spend time grooming and talking to your mount. You could also take relaxing trail rides.

Training a jumper is no easy feat but if you use these three tips, you can train your horse to navigate any course safely. With the right foundation, your mount could become a talented jumper with many wins.
